We Have Uninvited Houseguests: Furry Critters

No bats in our belfry, nope! We have been invaded by a family of raccoons.

This photograph taken the other day by a wildlife removal service technician solved the mystery of the recent scratching, chattering and patter of tiny feet heard throughout our house, emanating from the ceiling.

They have been in residence for a couple of months, based on the size of one of the raccoon babies pictured, (right) with Mama acting threatening, (left).

I could not bear to have these critters executed . . . so work begins to extricate them and have them relocated to a wildlife preserve.

All I can say is thank goodness for the tax rebate we just received. We get to bump up our Nation's economy while we save the critters whose habitats we are destroying.

And we were thinking of a flat screen TV! Oh well.

Have you ever shared your home with uninvited furry houseguests? Leave a comment and let us know.

I hope your furry house guests are gone soon. I love animals but when it comes to raccoons I cannot feel any sympathy for them. They are destructive and dangerous. they are among the predators who love to kill and eat cats and other pets. I am glad you will be rid of them soon. You would think I would love raccoons but....we raised them from a rescued litter and they are smelly foul tempered and just plain nasty animals.

I'm glad they are being relocated to the great outdoors where they belong. I always feel so sorry for the creatures who wind up where they don't belong because we humans took over THEIR space. That said - I would have rather had the flat screen TV too!

Gosh, how in the world did they manage to get up there and raise a family? I am so sorry about this. I know it is costly to get rid of them. Year before last we were totally invaded by mice. They were just horrible in the garage. I went to leave on day and there was one right on the landing. I opened and closed the gargage door several times hoping to scare it off, but the little bugger just looked at me like I was nuts. ThenI heard that if you put peppermint oil on a cotton ball and put them around your house, they would never come in. So I bought some, and it really did work. We never saw the first mouse. But I have no idea how to prevent racoons. What a mess!

Oh mannnnnnnnn... I have to agree with the other posters in that I hope you are rid of them soon. We haven't had a problem with coons here (and I live near Jo), but we have had a similar problem twice now with possums. So you sure have my sympathy!

At least we don't live up North where it seems most of my friends spent their stimulus rebate on heating oil.

P.S. Happy Birthday!

I admit, I used to think they were cute....until I saw one on my front deck raiding my bird feeders. I know they carry rabies...and while I could never kill a racoon, I applaude you for catching them and setting them free...then boarding up however they got into your attic in the first place1

The summer after we moved into our house we had squirrels in the attic. Exterminating company was called and live traps were set but by then they had moved back into the trees where they belonged. Recently while replacing the bottom of a kitchen cabinet we found an old stash of leaves and acorns!
